Frequently Asked Questions

What size incline (wedge) mat should I get?
As a general rule, a gymnast's wedge mat should be at least one foot longer than their height - so a gymnast 50" or shorter fits well on the medium incline mat, while taller gymnasts should size up to the large incline mat. Medium incline mats are best suited for intermediate gymnasts ages 6 and up.
How thick should my tumbling mat be?
Our gymnastics tumbling mats come in a 1½" or 2" thick crosslink polyethylene foam core, and thickness and length are really a personal preference for your gymnast - thicker mats offer more cushion for tumbling and landings, while thinner mats are easier to fold and store. Shop Tumbling Mats.
Can I connect multiple mats together to cover more floor space?
Yes, within the same product line — but different varieties of mats won't interlock with each other (for example, martial arts mats won't interlock with multipurpose mats, and rubber-topped foam won't interlock with Forest Floor foam), even across different manufacturers. Stick to the same mat type and generation if you're expanding your setup. See our General FAQs for more.
What age or skill level are balance beams and octagons designed for?
Our balance beams are designed for younger gymnasts who are just learning balancing skills. Octagons work well across a wider age range for building coordination and balance, and come in multiple sizes to match different skill levels.
How do I clean and take care of my gymnastics mats?
Vinyl-topped mats are easy to clean with a vinyl cleaner or warm water and a gentle disinfectant. To keep foam mats looking their best, keep them out of direct sunlight and in a temperature-regulated space, since drastic temperature swings can cause the material to swell or contract. See our General FAQs for more.

Choosing the Right Tumbling Octagon

An octagon skill shape tumbling mat is a versatile training tool used to help gymnasts, cheerleaders, and acro-dancers learn, practice, and perfect rotational skills. The eight-sided foam shape safely guides athletes through inversions, such as back handsprings, walkovers, and forward/backward rolls, while preventing uncontrolled landings and reducing the risk of injury as new skills are introduced. Available in small, medium, and large sizes to match your gymnast's age and height, a Tumbling Octagon makes it easy to build confidence and progress safely at home or in the club.
