A Brief History of Cheerleading

Cheerleading has a rich and diverse history that spans over a century. It originated in the late 1800s in the United States as a group of male students cheering on their university’s sports teams. Over time, cheerleading evolved into a more organized activity and became a popular form of entertainment at high school and college sporting events.

Early Years

In the 1920s and 1930s, cheerleading saw a surge in popularity, with the creation of gymnastics-style routines, music accompaniments, and uniforms. During this period, the first national cheerleading organization was formed, providing a platform for the exchange of ideas and the growth of the sport.

During World War II, cheerleading took a temporary break as many men and women joined the military. However, after the war, it experienced a resurgence, and by the late 1940s, cheerleading had become an integral part of American culture, with the first cheerleading competition held in 1948.

Modern Cheer

In the 1960s and 1970s, cheerleading evolved even further with the incorporation of dance and more challenging gymnastics elements, and the establishment of cheerleading as a sport in its own right. By the 1980s and 1990s, cheerleading had become a major industry, with thousands of cheerleaders participating in competitions and showcases across the country.

Importance of Safety

The use of high-quality mats is an essential aspect of cheerleading safety. Mats provide a soft landing surface for cheerleaders to perform their stunts, tumbling, and jumps, reducing the risk of injury during a performance or practice.

Our mats come in various sizes, thicknesses, and colors so every aspect of a performance can be curated with safety and style. For example, thicker and denser mats are typically used for high-level gymnastics and tumbling, while lighter and more portable mats are suitable for cheerleading routines performed on location or at home.

Today, cheerleading continues to grow in popularity, with millions of participants in the United States and around the world. At We Sell Mats, we’re proud to support cheer athletes and their families with high-quality products for years to come.
