A good home exercise routine is the ideal workout scenario for a lot of people – no expensive gym membership, no extra time spent driving someplace else, and all the physical benefits that the local gym can provide. Sound too good to be true? Well, that all depends; there are a lot of considerations to be made if you want to try working out at home. It can be just as effective at suiting your needs as a gym, but make sure you’ve got all the bases covered! You’ll thank yourself when you realize how much easier you’ve made the whole thing on yourself.
First, and probably most importantly, home exercise routines need to be routines. This is one of the easiest places to slip up. You’ve got to make sure you’re staying consistent in your exercise, and this can be a lot more difficult at home for a few reasons. For example, when you’re paying for a gym membership, you’ll go more consistently just because you’re paying for it – you want to get your money’s worth. At home, it can be a lot easier to put it off because it’s not costing you anything. In fact, you might often find yourself distracted by day-to-day household tasks that occur to you in the middle of a set, and then you’ve got to go take care of it, promising yourself you’ll be right back, then this other thing pops up, then another… suddenly, hours have passed and you only got half your workout done.
So, consistency is important, but there’s also the issue of the home exercise routine itself – what kind of workout can you get at home, and what are you missing by not being at a gym? Well, it’s likely that you won’t have the large, expensive equipment that you’ll find at a gym, but fortunately, you can often still replicate the effect of using those machines with household objects or basic exercises like crunches, sit-ups, push-ups, squats, lunges and modified versions of all of those. Put some energetic music on, grab your comfy exercise mat that you bought from us (you did that, right?) and go for it!
