A Lifetime of Safety on Martial Arts Mats

A Lifetime of Safety on Martial Arts Mats

It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned martial artist or a kid just embarking on the path, if you don’t have quality martial arts mats to practice on, you’re putting yourself in jeopardy. You probably do martial arts for a number of reasons, one of which is to maintain an active lifestyle. How do you make sure you can continue this routine for a lifetime? You do everything you can to make sure you stay injury-free, and that means using the right equipment, like tatami finish martial arts mats.

Think about the martial arts mats at the studio where you or your child learn from a knowledgable and experienced professional teacher. Does the instructor have you practice on hardwood floors? Certainly not, if he or she is a good instructor. You’re practicing on at least a 1/2″ of EVA foam martial arts mats. Chances are, they’re ribbed just like our tatami finish martial arts mat, too. Why the special surface texture? The ribs of the surface mimic the actual tatami rice straw mats that the original practitioners of the martial arts used, and they knew that having more traction allowed for better balance and grip. So our martial arts mats, no matter which thickness you choose, will have this same ribbed finish for exactly the same reason. Slipping is not an option when you practice or compete, and the tatami finish makes sure that’s not something you have to worry about.

The martial arts mats at your studio may be small or large, depending on the space that is covered. You can obviously cover a larger space faster with jumbo martial arts mats, but if the space isn’t so big, the standard size martial arts mats will fit perfectly. When you’re ready to install a space in your home for your practice, take the area you want to cover into consideration. You’ll also want to consider whether children will be using the mats. You may be an experienced martial artist with little need for extra padding, but kids need a little more protection. If they’re going to use the mats, consider the 3/4″ or 1″ mats for ultimate cushioning and support.

When you have sufficient padding and traction in your martial arts mats at home, you can rest assured that your practice will be safe and supported. You want your practice to last a lifetime, so make sure the martial arts mats you purchase for home use can do the same thing.
