Prevent Training Injuries with Martial Arts Mats

Judo Competitors

There is risk of injury associated with every sport and fitness activity, but something as simple as a shock-absorbing mat can make the difference between bumps and bruises and a trip to the doctor. Learning a martial art is a reliable way to stay fit and active, and practicing with a reliable mat beneath you is the best way to make sure you're able to keep doing it as long as you want. Whether you're into hard throws or meditative slow motion, a 1/2" or 3/4" Tatami finish martial arts mat is going to provide you with more secure footing, more forgiveness for your joints, and cushioning should you take a fall. Some of the most common martial arts injuries could be mitigated with such a simple application as a floor mat.

Of course there's no substitute for conditioning, flexibility, and training to prevent injury in any fitness activity, but in a practice such as the martial arts, injury is even more likely. In arts like jiu jitsu where grappling is the standard, secure footing is crucial. Slippery flooring or smooth surfaces increase the risk of injury exponentially. Broken toes are common beginner jiu jitsu injuries, but with a thick, Tatami finish mat, good grip and the confidence that comes with it can help keep the fighter whole and in top shape (on his toes, so to speak). In judo and other arts where throws are an integral part of the practice, the importance of a good mat is obvious. We can't overstate the importance of the Tatami finish, however, as secure footing anchors your ability to execute a throw, a take down, or a defensive move. But if you have to hit the floor, regardless of your level of conditioning, you'll want a good 3/4" of padding between yourself and the hard floor.

Increase the longevity of your martial arts practice by investing in top-quality Tatami finish martial arts mats. If you're just beginning a practice or feel extra padding would be best for you, we suggest the 3/4" mats.  If you've achieved a level of mastery and feel a focus on secure footing rather than cushioning is appropriate for you, the 1/2" mats are perfect. Either way, padding and grip will extend your ability to practice and master your martial art with strength and confidence.
